Full malware investigation conducted on a corporate network compromise, tracing an Emotet infection from a phishing email through payload delivery and C2 communication.
Conducted a full malware investigation on a corporate network compromise using Wireshark and Snort/Suricata IDS alert logs. Identified the infected host through DHCP and Kerberos traffic analysis, recovering the IP address, MAC address, hostname, and user account. Traced the infection to a phishing email containing a malicious Word document macro that downloaded an Emotet payload from an attacker-controlled domain. Extracted the binary from the packet capture, generated a SHA256 hash, and confirmed the sample as Win32/Emotet via VirusTotal. Documented post-infection C2 beaconing, external IP reconnaissance, and SMB lateral movement attempts. Produced a technical forensic lab report and an executive summary written for a non-technical audience.
